Music is medicine.
Hello friends, it's been a while since I've written and a lot has happened.
As many of you know, my mom passed away in May, after a sudden change in her condition. We spent weeks at the hospital with her, and every moment was precious. My whole extended family showed up and sang her songs, told stories, and shared many tears and hugs.
She had not been well for some years, and I was her partner in care, so this loss has left a big hole in my heart and life. I know it will take a long time to process - there is a lot of unravelling to do. Thanks to everyone who reached out with support, I felt your love surrounding me.
I was sad (but also lucky to be able) to cancel my Newfoundland tour. Since then I've been taking it really slow, getting back into work one little bit at a time.
I had a beautiful time singing songs with friends in PEI for the magical Festival of Small Halls... it's amazing how healing music is. What a powerful gift. Music truly is medicine.
Now, despite part of me wanting to stay home in my little nest, it's time to get back on the road, and back to work. Mom was my biggest fan and I know she'll be with me as I travel around.
I'm heading out this week to Alberta to play at the The South Country Fair in Ft MacLeod and the Calgary Folk Music Festival.
Bonus: I get to play in a grain elevator in Nanton AB. And a patio show in Sherwood park.
Then I have the joy of presenting The Songs of Gene MacLellan in my hometown at the Hearbourfront Theatre. We have been in rehearsals with the full band, and it's going to be so much fun! I have a killer band of fine folks: Kim Dunn, Nick Gauthier, Mark Westberg & Rodney Arsenault. There are only four shows, so if you're around, please don't miss it!
After that, I have some very special shows with Lisa MacIsaac (Madison Violet) and Sarah MacDougall. We've been working on a trio show and I'm so excited for that. We start at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festivaland then will traipse around Nova Scotia for a few more shows. If you happen to not be in the Maritimes for this, we'll be presenting the trio in Ontario and Germany in the Fall.
And let's not stop there - I'm on a roll!
I'm headed back to some very special places in my heart.
St Andrews by the Sea, NB - with Lucy Farrell - on Minister's Island. Possibly the only place where the set time is decided by the tides.
AND I have two shows at the Victoria Playhouse - a gem of a theatre in a jewel of a town.
August 3 - Solo
September 7 - with Lucy Farrell & Rachael Kilgour
